25 Years of Tyrell

25 Years of Tyrell

25 Years of Tyrell

IBC 2025 wrapped up earlier this week, and as I walked the halls of the RAI, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much this industry has evolved—and how Tyrell has evolved with it. This year isn’t just another IBC for us; it marks 25 years of Tyrell. That’s a milestone I’m incredibly proud of, and this show was the perfect backdrop to pause, take stock, and look forward.

What Stood Out at IBC 2025

IBC this year felt like a more focused version of the conversations we’ve been having for a while. AI was everywhere—not just as a buzzword, but in practical tools. From automated QC to metadata tagging to speeding up workflows, AI is becoming a core part of production rather than just an add-on.

Cloud was another dominant topic, but the tone has shifted. We’re not debating if cloud is the future anymore—we’re figuring out how to make it work. Hybrid models, multi-cloud setups, and sustainable workflows are the real conversations now. These aren’t speculative “what if” ideas; they’re real-world problems teams are solving every day.

For me the highlight of IBC wasn’t a single stand-out announcement or piece of tech—it was the people. There’s no substitute for bumping into a customer you’ve known for years, catching up with a manufacturer face-to-face, or having those impromptu conversations that never happen over Teams. You pick up so much more in person—asking tough questions, getting candid answers, and swapping experiences over a coffee or beer. That human connection is what makes IBC special, and for Tyrell, it’s what makes these events worth every minute.

25 Years of Change

That human connection has been at the heart of Tyrell since day one. When we started in 2000, the industry looked very different. Hollywood and broadcasters still held all the keys. Content creation and distribution were tightly controlled, and the workflows were rigid and expensive. Fast forward 25 years and those walls are well and truly gone. We’re creating more content than ever before, for more platforms than we could have imagined back then.

Tyrell has grown up with that change. Over the years, we’ve had four offices, three brand evolutions, and five websites. We started out supplying equipment—shipping boxes and building systems. But as technology shifted, so did we. Today, we’re proud to be a trusted media technical consultant. We help our customers design, optimise, and manage their entire media pipelines, increasingly cloud-first but always tailored to their needs.

That ability to adapt—to see what’s next and pivot towards it—has been key to staying relevant for a quarter of a century.

Milestones That Moved Us Forward

When I think about the industry moments that shaped our journey, a few really stand out:

  • 2000 – The Internet: Broadband put content distribution on a global scale.
  • 2007 – The iPhone: Content creation and consumption became truly mobile.
  • 2010 – AWS Media Services: Cloud computing became a real option for media workflows.
  • 2013 – H.265: Compression breakthroughs made scalable streaming possible.
  • 2019 – The Streaming Wars: The race for audience attention reshaped content investment.

Now, in 2025, AI feels like the next milestone. It’s not hype anymore—it’s happening.

Our Story Continues

On a personal level, Tyrell has been the perfect outlet for both my technical curiosity and my creative instincts. This industry has given me the chance to build a business that satisfies both—and for that, I’m grateful.

And of course, none of this would have been possible without the Tyrell team. To all the Tyrell’ers past and present: thank you. You’ve made this journey not only possible, but enjoyable.

For Tyrell, IBC 2025 wasn’t just another show—it was a marker of how far we’ve come, and a chance to reconnect with the community that’s been part of our story. The challenges ahead—scalability, security, and sustainability—are real, but so are the opportunities.

As Tyrell enters its next chapter, our mission is simple: to keep guiding and supporting media organisations as they navigate an ever-changing landscape. That means staying curious, creative, and above all, committed to helping our customers succeed.

Here’s to 25 years of Tyrell—and to what comes next.

Storj – New releases at IBC 2025

Storj Sets New Standard for Media Storage and Compute at IBC 2025

Storj’s presence at IBC 2025 saw three major announcements, setting the company firmly on course to become one of the most disruptive forces in the media market.

Storj’s distributed storage platform is already reshaping cloud economics with its dramatically lower costs, greener credentials, and transparent pricing compared to traditional public cloud providers. At this year’s IBC, Storj (pronounced Store-J) introduced four new storage tiers, each designed to meet specific workflow requirements with no hidden API or file costs and generous included egress:

  • Price: $6, €6, £5 per TB, per month (PAYG model)

  • Egress: Charged at $0.02, €0.01, £0.01 per GB per month

  • Hidden Costs: None — no API or file access fees

  • Equivalent To: AWS S3 Infrequent Access, or Wasabi Hot Tier (90-day min retention), with two regions of replication

RCS Backup – Tyrell Exclusive

For long-term archive, discounted through pre-purchased storage for secondary or long-term requirements.

  • Price:$5, €5, £4 per TB, per year (annual commit model)

  • Egress: Includes 1x your storage commit per month

  • Hidden Costs: None — no API or file access fees

  • Equivalent To: AWS S3 Glacier Instant Access, or Wasabi Hot Tier (90-day min retention)

Object Mount

Storj announced the acquisition of Object Mount at IBC 2024, and this year it returned to IBC 2025 with two vital new features for production workflows. But first — what is Object Mount?

Edit, Conform, Master…

Object storage, whether cloud or on-prem, was not originally designed for editing. Over the past few IBCs, several solutions have emerged to make object storage suitable for production workflows. Object Mount stands out by enabling real-time editing across all object storage types — whether on-premise Object Matrix or cloud platforms like AWS S3, Microsoft Azure, and Storj’s distributed network. Collaborators can share credentials, allowing direct editing no matter where the files reside.

Unlike other solutions, Object Mount does not wrap, shard, or alter files. It presents the storage as a standard file system to your workstation, allowing your favorite NLE to work directly with the file while keeping it accessible to other workflows.

What’s new for IBC 2025?

  • Network-Based Cache – You can now designate a network volume to store streamed cache. Any file cached for instant access becomes available to all users on the network.

  • File Pinning – You can identify which files to pin to a local or network cache volume. Normally, Object Mount’s cache operates on a first-in, first-out basis, but pinned files remain persistent and are not cleared when newer files arrive.

These updates make Object Mount an even more powerful and flexible tool for collaborative, production-ready workflows.

Virtual Compute

Finally, Storj announced plans for virtual CPU and GPU compute on its distributed network. For Tyrell, this is particularly exciting: it will enable cheaper compute than AWS, with zero egress fees and ultra-low latency access to Storj storage. This development extends Storj’s vision beyond storage into high-performance compute, opening new possibilities for media workflows.

Why Editshare’s New Ultimate Series Packs a Punch and What’s New with Version 25.1

Why Editshare’s New Ultimate Series Packs a Punch and What’s New with Version 25.1

It’s been a little while since we’ve done a deeper dive blog focusing on our partner EditShare, which is perhaps unfair considering the updates and product releases they have put out over the last 9 months or so. We want to dig into the new Ultimate line of hardware and the startling value proposition it makes, as well as the significant updates in EditShare’s Flow software released in the last weeks with version 25.1.

EditShare EFS Ultimate Servers – Good, Fast and Cheap?

Online and nearline storage is the bedrock of post production facilities, it doesn’t have to be flashy (unless you’re dealing with DPX files) and novel features are very rarely going to sway a purchasing decision. What does make a storage platform appeal is where it plots on the venn diagram of performance, reliability and price.

The received wisdom here is that you can’t have all 3. I can buy a COTS NAS and have a perfectly good system that’s cheap and reliable but not fast, fine for nearline. If I load up that COTS NAS box with NVMe drives, as many people have, I have fast and cheap but a support desk that is not used to media workflow or the performance and reliability that comes with a media-centric filesystem. I could opt for a reliable and fast system from a media specific manufacturer and pay a reassuringly expensive bill for speed and reliability

Since the release of EditShare’s EFS filesystem in 2014 EditShare has been well in the camp of systems you can consider very reliable and performant. On price their storage hardware has always tracked consistently with the market competition, with a consensus in the industry that you must pay for the speed and reliability that you need to underpin your business.

Now with the release of the Ultimate range of storage appliances, which are being offered alongside their enterprise range based on HPE hardware, EditShare are significantly reducing the cost of entry to running an EFS filesystem.

The cost reduction does not carry a tax on performance or flexibility; Ultimate replicates the range of capacity and form factor variants and bandwidth metrics are a slight improvement on the HPE models.

EditShare Ultimate EFS

For Ultimate, the underlying hardware changes from HPe to an OEM hardware platform. EditShare are reluctant to talk about who the OEM is, but it doesn’t take a keen eye to note the similarity to the last pre-HP models and we’re sure they will be as robust as that venerable range was. Where you do make a sacrifice is in the loss of the HPE worldwide support infrastructure, but with a significant UK base and well-established engineering knowledge both in EditShare UK and partners like Tyrell, that’s not going to change the user experience for 90% of users.

Most startling though is price and this is the piece that boots the EFS ultimate range close to the intersection of our venn diagram. Taking a typical entry level system of a single 96TB server, the Ultimate range represents 40% savings on the HPe hardware EFS alternative. The Ultimate series represents a game changing price point.

EditShare release EFS 25.1 – The extra value

As we mentioned, before the bombshell of the Ultimate series, EditShare EFS platforms tracked closely in price to competitive systems. Where EditShare has had a very successful edge in the market is on the software ‘value add’ represented by the FLOW suite of production and media asset management tools that comes bundled in with their storage hardware.

Most readers will be aware of FLOW at some level, so we’ll stop short of a full ‘what is FLOW’ section. However, with the release of version 25.1 bringing in the new unified interface of ‘EditShare One’, alongside remote workflows via Swift Link it’s clear that the whole FLOW and EFS ecosystem is becoming increasingly coherent and powerful. The applications for FLOW and EFS are wide ranging and it’s unlikely that any user would find themselves utilising the whole suite, equally there will be very few facilities out there that don’t have a use case for at least one of its features, so it’s worth a quick review;

Proxy viewing and logging via Organize.

View and play back media directly within the interface. Add or update metadata for better asset tracking and searchability. Customise panels and views to match specific workflows (e.g., logging vs. managing).

  • Updates with 25.1 – New flexible layouts in the Organize module make media navigation easier than ever. Users can customise their workspace, drag multiple assets with ease, and benefit from the new Manage Viewpoint, giving simultaneous visibility into media spaces and projects. Enhanced search tools and smarter navigation features eliminate unnecessary clicks and duplicated searches.

EFS filesystem (Remote workflows with EFS Swift Link)

Swift Link is a new set of features including VPN, file system updates and a bandwidth monitoring algorithm that, together allow remote users to securely connect and work on proxy/offline material as if they were on premise. Updates to the EFS filesystem have also improved on-premise throughput at higher bandwidths and better management of small file workflows.

  • Updates with 25.1 – The EditShare OS has been optimised for better hardware support, increased throughput, and improved hybrid environment compatibility, all unsurprising now that EFS sits across 2 hardware variants. A new installer speeds up system reimages, while the clean UI keeps everything sleek and intuitive.
Automated ingest, transcode and processing with FLOW Automation.

FLOW automation is a node-based workflow management tool that is perfect for taking repetitive tasks such as metadata tagging (AI or manual), transcoding camera rushes or indeed anything that can be governed by a logical flow.

  • Updates with 25.1 – Users can now trigger workflows directly from EditShare One. You can scan assets, launch automations, and manage templates — all from a simplified, centralised interface. Batch uploads now support advanced metadata tagging and even proxy generation on the fly, while real-time upload tracking keeps your team in sync.

File auditing and compliance with Guardian (RAM upgrade needed for this one)

Data auditing and compliance is key to meeting MPA requirements adopted by our favourite OTT platforms. EditShare Guardian helps production companies meet streaming platform requirements by providing powerful, real-time auditing and monitoring across the entire media workflow. Who accessed what and when from where? Who deleted that lost cut? Guardian delivers all the events and metrics you need across your filesystem.

  • Updates with 25.1 – The Guardian monitoring system has moved away from an Elastic/Kibana backend, now features faster dashboards built on OpenSearch, smarter event filtering, exportable reports, and cleaner audit logs — all while staying resilient through server changes.

Value stacked on value

As with the HPE range of EditShare servers, the new Ultimate range has these software features bundled in. Making Ultimate a staggeringly good value proposition by including the software features that have made EditShare an industry favourite on a significantly lower cost platform.

Why Editshare’s New Ultimate Series Packs a Punch and What’s New with Version 25.1

A Tale of Migration- Legacy to Cloud

Storj and Object Mount

In my last article about Storj, I focused on the economics of managing a cloud archive and the rich benefits Storj can offer both in base cost and operational efficiency. This time around I wanted to take some time to look at the advantages Storj’s client side mount tool Object Mount can bring to both migration strategies and day to day operation. As well as considering the challenges of migrating a legacy archive onto a cloud first platform like Storj.

A platform to monetise your content

If your archive is a source of income, then the availability of your archived data needs to be at the heart of your operation. Poor performance and organisation have a direct impact on customer experience and lost time in admin or management, both of which have a less visible but very real impact on your bottom line.

With constant innovations in content analysis, you need to have fast and easily administered access to your archive to take advantage of these services to make your archive work harder for you.

With centralised cloud providers such as AWS, providing data access to users and services can be challenging with highly trained staff required to manage access and privileges via identity management services like AWS’ IAM.

With Storj, user permissions are managed through a user-friendly UI. Your data is just as secure with encryption for all data at rest, and MFA quick and easy to configure, you just don’t need a degree to deploy it.

With Storj and their POSIX compliant mount client Object Mount, you can have the best of both worlds. Storj has a fully AWS compliant S3 API to allow any service with S3 integration to hook straight into your buckets. Object Mount adds to this functionality by giving Mac, Windows and Linux clients local mount access to your S3 data. Object Mount allows your S3 storage to act like a local disk with full file locking capabilities. Intelligent caching of hot data reduces latency for frequently accessed files and most importantly, Object Mount is optimised for large files, pre-fetching data into your cache bringing performance to media playback and processing from S3 sources.

The revolutionary part of the Object Mount and Storj workflow is that you can have direct access to your archive data for collaborative editing, SaaS AI and transcoding services on any platform. Object Mount even works brilliantly deployed in a docker environment to provide fast data access to dynamic micro services.

The ideal back end to your store front

The ideal end game of a well-managed, monetised archive is to have a cost effective, highly available online storefront, with a great user experience.

Solutions like VIDA, recently adopted by BBC Worldwide, gives you exactly that and with Storj as a back end you can enhance an already great platform with the elevated resilience, availability and performance of Storj.

Remember that Storj distributes data across a global network with no bottlenecks for disparate regions. Your content is available globally with faster retrieval speeds and increased reliability for storefront customers accessing high-resolution product images, videos or any media asset, and with your data spread and protected across hundreds of data centres across the globe you have removed any single point of failure.

Your dev and admin team will also be filled with joy as Storj’s S3-compatible API allows for seamless integration with existing e-commerce and DAM platforms without major workflow disruptions and no invisible tax on API calls that you get with AWS S3.

This combination of affordability, performance, and security makes Storj a natural choice for a scalable, high-performance DAM backend supporting a global storefront like VIDA.

And if your operation is not direct sales but focused on processing or re-versioning then all the above benefits apply to Media and Project Asset Management platforms too!

Example MAM/Storefront back-end

That all sounds good, but I can’t face the migration.

Even when there is a compelling cost and performance argument to move your archive to a new platform, there is no bigger turn off than a challenging migration, particularly if you have a data on multiple systems and drives.

Because Storj have POSIX compliant access through Object Mount as well as AWS S3 API, the process of moving your data into a Storj environment can be navigated with far less pain than other platforms.

Executing a migration is a serious business and spending some time on the planning is key to success. Fortunately, at Tyrell we have the experience and tools that can take the pain out of the process and take advantage of Storj’s unique features.

Unstructured data on drives in cupboards and camera cards in that drawer in the corner can be the most anxiety inducing format an archive can take. With fast desktop access to the Storj platform through Object Mount the copy process can be made as painless as possible, although it’s likely some poor assistant is still going to have to translate that old excel sheet into a folder structure. Although it’s not all bad news for the intern, once transferred Storj’s flexible access methods and performance mean that it’s a great platform for AI tools to run image recognition, audio to text transcription on your files and deeply enrich your metadata.

Structured data on an LTFS system or another cloud location is ripe for a well-designed analytics tool like StorageDNA’s DNAfabric or Cloudfirst.io .

For small and medium sized organizations StorageDNA is a fantastic option to get a balanced view of your storage estate. DNAfabric is specifically designed to interrogate large and disparate pools of data, and their respective cost profiles help you get a complete view of just how well your storage is working for you. The Tyrell team can help you use this intelligence to rationalise and transfer your data and reduce both the headache and cost of a significant migration.

If you are an enterprise level business then inevitably something more turnkey is going to be needed, that’s where Cloudfirst come in. By providing an in depth audit of legacy archive storage, Cloudfirst can give you a clear written TCO report setting out the ongoing and projected costs of keeping your on-premise archive running, alongside a fully cost projected view of what that same data would look like in the cloud or in a hybrid deployment. This is not just a bean counting exercise. Cloudfirst dig into the operational impact of transitioning away from existing infrastructure to give you a holistic view of where you are and what transitioning your archive could look like. With major media archive migrations under their belt including a 30PB migration for the BBC, they are a fantastic choice for any media enterprise to help explore cloud for archive.

Pre-Migration Analysis AKA, what don’t you need

It seems obvious that it’s pointless moving redundant or duplicated data into any archive, least of all one billed on utilisation. But many users would be shocked at the levels of data duplication present in many storage pools.

Analysis, be that automated from StorageDNA Fabric, or turnkey from Cloudfirst is crucial in making sure your new platform is not bloated with costly, redundant data.

Don’t start before you get your price, particularly when dealing with centralised cloud

It’s not really in a consultant’s nature to say don’t take my word for it… But never just take our word for it! Real world cost analysis is essential in making an informed decision on your storage strategy and StorageDNA Fabric and Cloudfirst can help get your projections as accurate as possible, so you can feel confident you’re making the right call before hitting the transfer button.

DNAfabric offers tools to analyse and compare storage costs across various cloud providers and tiers. For example, how can you minimise the API call fees when pulling data from Glacier Deep? You may be able to save money or enter a new price tier by bulk retrieval. DNAfabric and the Tyrell engineering team can build you accurate cost models to inform your planning.

For those with a need for a more granular projection, Cloudfirst take a significantly deeper dive and produce a 5-year projection. Empowering you to make informed decisions based on specific needs. If your data is at significant scale then this kind of detail is essential to make informed decisions.

Keep your business going

The biggest fear for many when they hear the word migration on any system is disruption to business. Making a migration smooth and transparent to the user is an art form.

DNAfabric employs file transfer acceleration to enhance transfer speeds, ensuring that data moves as swiftly as possible from AWS S3, AWS Glacier or in fact any service to Storj. You can utilise this to minimise the delta between the source and destination of your migration by making the transfer quick. You also have check sum tools to ensure your data is secure in its new home before you retire your legacy archive

Again Cloudfirst goes further, fully managing the transfer while ensuring your business continuity, taking the pressure off your technical teams and allowing them to concentrate on the most important thing- your customers.

Data flow for a small/medium scale migration

In conclusion

If you have a large on premise LTO archive, significant cloud S3 presence or find yourself sifting through that cupboard of Lacie Rugged drives 3 times a week, the agility and cost benefits of Storj and Object Mount have the potential to not only save you significant sums of money but revolutionise the way you access, manipulate and monetise your content.

If you share this conclusion, then you can rest assured that Tyrell, along with our partners Storj, StorageDNA, and Cloudfirst.io, can make the transition process simple and efficient.

Why Editshare’s New Ultimate Series Packs a Punch and What’s New with Version 25.1

Tyrell’s Take: Storj – The next generation archive platform

Storj is an innovative platform with a unique approach to cloud object storage that comes with cost and performance advantages that are particularly interesting to the SMB media and broadcast sector. In this short article, I want to break down Storj’s advantages for archive applications and go beyond the marketing straplines to see how much cost and workload Storj can save your business.

Technical advantages of multi-cloud erasure coding

And the award for the driest heading in an article goes to… But it is important to understand, at least at a mile-high level, what is fundamentally different about Storj’s platform to frame the points that follow.

The rest

All major cloud object store providers like AWS, Google, and Azure have the same basic model and store redundant (erasure encoded) data within a single region or data centre. If a storage node fails, recovery requires rebuilding missing data from a limited set of storage locations within that region.

To make sure there is enough parity data in the region to survive the loss of several storage nodes, many of the big cloud providers use triple replication (3 copies of your data) for redundancy.

So, let’s keep these points in our mind:

  • Data is restricted to geographic regions, if you want it somewhere else you copy it there (even if you don’t realise, you’re doing it)
  • Limited locations to re-construct your data if there is an outage
  • Compute overhead can cause latency spikes for read or write operations
  • For every byte of data you upload, you’re often using 3 bytes to store parity data.

Storj

Storj aren’t reinventing the wheel with their platform, but they are far more open-minded with the diameter of wheels, and by making one profound choice in their infrastructure, they have changed the way we can access and protect our data.

The core difference between the model of the hyperscale providers outlined above and Storj is that Storj has no concept of regions; they are a truly global filesystem, and as we will see, the design decisions this leads to are where the advantages for media users lie. Storj, like the centralised cloud providers, uses erasure encoding when writing your data but splits each file into 80 chunks, distributed globally on hundreds of nodes. These nodes are procured from spare capacity in global data centres, meaning they are low cost and vendor agnostic.

Only a 29 portion of these chunks is required to rebuild any file, meaning your data is incredibly secure. It also means that Storj can choose the fastest connections to your data from the hundreds of locations and download data in parallel, meaning much quicker access, not dependent on region.

Expanding the scale of nodes and breaking up files into more distributed chunks allows Storj to keep their data redundancy overhead down to 1.3x from the standard 3x in centralised cloud providers. So, in review, we see a much more flexible, performant, and economical platform.

So, in review we see a much more flexible, performant and economical platform:

  • Data is NOT restricted to geographic regions, if you want it you can access it wherever you are.
  • 80+ locations to re-construct your data if there is an outage, higher fault tolerance
  • Parallel download of data chunks increases performance
  • For every byte of data you upload, you’re using 1.3 bytes to store parity data, translating to be less cost overhead thus lower prices to end users.

Which is all to say that when compared to centralised providers, Storj is not only more resilient but also faster and simpler to use. And by using spare capacity to build their platform and vastly reducing data duplication, it is significantly cheaper and greener by design.

Archive Costs, the visible and the invisible

Let’s break with sales patter tradition and talk about cost upfront. For an archive, cost has always gone hand in hand with durability as the main driving factor, so why not cut to the chase?

With all cloud providers needing to meet each other’s standards, Storj included, of 11 9’s durability, we can avoid labouring that point. They are all, in their own way, fairly bulletproof in terms of data loss; however, data recovery is a little more complex, but more on that later.

As the leader in the media space, let’s pick on AWS’s published costs as a centralised cloud provider.

Let’s also throw in Wasabi as another popular but smaller cloud platform for our industry.

In my opinion, although even the most carefully curated LTFS archive is not going to get to 99.999999999% durable, we should still consider private LTO as a viable solution in this comparison. Who am I to argue with a 20+ year pedigree? It’s served us well, and there are very compelling systems out there on the later generations of tape.

So, let’s look at some numbers, or visible costs. These are what you are likely to see on a monthly bill. I will be the first to say that there is perhaps some unfairness here to AWS, as the price per TB does not take into consideration tiering (usually kicking in at around 150TB utilisation and moving from there) or pre-committed contracts which can be compelling if you’re a multinational digital rights holder but unattainable for the regular Joe. This is a good indicative guide for small to medium-sized media organisations looking to make their archive more available and cost-effective.

We can see that on the headline numbers, Storj blows AWS out of the water and, as already set out, has a more agile and available platform.

Where you might pause to consider your options would be on the ‘egress free’ providers such as Wasabi and the more traditional on-premise solutions based around tape architecture.

So, to address these providers, let’s talk about invisible costs, not necessarily on a consolidated monthly bill, but a very real cost to a business.

Escalating Infrastructure Costs

If you have a significant LTO estate, this one will feel familiar. Even if you are fastidious in maintaining your hardware, the speed of evolution in tape generations inevitably requires ongoing hardware refreshes, demands engineering staff, consumes rack space, power, and air-con, and is subject to escalating annual support costs, all of which become consolidated into the lower cost of Storj.

Operational Inefficiencies

How long do you keep a customer waiting for an asset in your archive? If you want to make AWS economical by using their glacier tiers, then you are talking hours or days. If you are on LTO and lucky enough to have the tapes to hand, you may be in the tens of minutes. If you have a well-organised Wasabi archive, you may be in a better position if you are in the right region. In all cases, with Storj’s parallel multi-node architecture, you will have better data speeds. Compared to Wasabi, you can expect a 2-5x increase with more efficiency on large data sets, and with half the first-byte latency, small file retrievals such as audio and file-per-frame video will see a large improvement. Even in comparison to AWS S3 standard and CDN architecture, Storj’s performance wins out. Plus, the time that you save during asset retrieval can mean your staff are moving onto the next task, your suites are working sooner, and your customers are happier.

Scalability Limitations

How’s your slot count? How many drives do you have? If you suddenly need to retrieve 4 tapes in your 2-drive library, how much longer is that conform the edit assist is working on going to take? Or how frustrated is your customer going to get waiting for those rushes? On-premise LTO is always finite, and in a world where data volumes are massively increasing and customer expectations are high.

Missed Revenue Opportunities

If your archive is a source of income, then the availability of your archived data needs to be at the heart of your operation. Poor performance and organisation have a direct impact on customer experience, and with the opportunity that AI analysis represents to make your assets more searchable and valuable, having simple and economical ways to integrate your archive into cloud services is more important than ever and can have a real impact on your P&L.

Conclusion

Why do you have an archive? If you have an insurance obligation to write your files once and only read or retrieve in an emergency, then your choice should really be based on the cost of ownership, maybe with a nod to user experience, but if it’s cheap and it works those two times a year you use it and you get your MD5 checksum, then who cares, right? Well, hopefully, I’ve given some context to the real cost of not only physical ownership but also the cost of inefficiency so often ignored that should make you think again.

And that cost of inefficiency truly becomes crucial if you have revenue hidden in your archive. Moving your archive into a cost-effective, highly available cloud platform like Storj should really be a no-brainer.

If the idea of moving your archive sends a cold chill down your spine, then fear not; my next article is going to focus on exactly that and how you can remove the pain from the process.

If you would like to learn more, see a demonstration of the power of Storj, and discuss what it can do to unlock your archive workflows, please get in touch with the Tyrell team.

Tyrell Launches Tyrell Cloud Standard

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Tyrell Cloud Standard, the latest addition to our Tyrell Cloud Workspace family.

We designed Tyrell Cloud Standard for smaller productions, independent creatives, and anyone who needs flexible infrastructure. With Tyrell Cloud Standard, you get a fully functional virtual production facility and only pay for the resources you actually use.

We know that every production is different, and sometimes you just need the right tools at the right time. Tyrell Cloud Standard provides that flexibility. You can spin up virtual workstations as needed, easily ingest SRT streams for vision mixing or post, and maintain complete control over when your Tyrell Cloud services are running. This makes it perfect for those who don’t require the same robust enterprise infrastructure offered by our Tyrell Cloud Advance subscription, but with the added bonus of a true pay-as-you-go model.

“We’ve always believed that creativity shouldn’t be limited by technology or budgets,” says Nick Soper, Tyrell Cloud Platform Owner. “With Tyrell Cloud, we set out to break down the traditional barriers of media production and create a more dynamic and accessible environment. Tyrell Cloud Standard takes this a step further, putting the power of the cloud directly into the hands of more creators than ever before.”

Our goal with Tyrell Cloud has always been to shake up the economic and technical landscape of content production, making cloud-based media production a practical and accessible reality for everyone. Tyrell Cloud Standard is a huge step in that direction.
