Object Mount

Storj announced the acquisition of Object Mount at IBC 2024, and this year it returned to IBC 2025 with two vital new features for production workflows. But first — what is Object Mount?

Edit, Conform, Master…

Object storage, whether cloud or on-prem, was not originally designed for editing. Over the past few IBCs, several solutions have emerged to make object storage suitable for production workflows. Object Mount stands out by enabling real-time editing across all object storage types — whether on-premise Object Matrix or cloud platforms like AWS S3, Microsoft Azure, and Storj’s distributed network. Collaborators can share credentials, allowing direct editing no matter where the files reside.

Unlike other solutions, Object Mount does not wrap, shard, or alter files. It presents the storage as a standard file system to your workstation, allowing your favorite NLE to work directly with the file while keeping it accessible to other workflows.

What’s new for IBC 2025?

  • Network-Based Cache – You can now designate a network volume to store streamed cache. Any file cached for instant access becomes available to all users on the network.

  • File Pinning – You can identify which files to pin to a local or network cache volume. Normally, Object Mount’s cache operates on a first-in, first-out basis, but pinned files remain persistent and are not cleared when newer files arrive.

These updates make Object Mount an even more powerful and flexible tool for collaborative, production-ready workflows.

Virtual Compute

Finally, Storj announced plans for virtual CPU and GPU compute on its distributed network. For Tyrell, this is particularly exciting: it will enable cheaper compute than AWS, with zero egress fees and ultra-low latency access to Storj storage. This development extends Storj’s vision beyond storage into high-performance compute, opening new possibilities for media workflows.

EGG Post Production Scales 4K and Remote Workflows with Tyrell and EditShare

EGG Post Production Scales 4K and Remote Workflows with Tyrell and EditShare

New technology boosts performance for high-resolution post-production and flexible workflows

EGG Post Production & VFX, one of Ireland’s leading post-production facilities, has expanded its capabilities with a significant storage upgrade from EditShare. This investment supports EGG’s growing demand for high-performance workflows, including 4K and beyond colour grading, while improving remote collaboration and workflow flexibility.

The project was delivered in collaboration with Tyrell, EditShare’s long-time channel partner in Ireland, who worked closely with EGG and EditShare to scope, install, and support the new system.

Founded in 2004 by editors Gary Shortall and Gareth Young, EGG has built a strong reputation for its award-winning editing, finishing, sound, and VFX services. The company delivers content for major Irish, UK, and US broadcasters, as well as audiences worldwide, making reliability and efficiency in their storage infrastructure critical to their operations.

To meet these demands, EGG has integrated EditShare’s 96TB NVMe and EFS300 256TB storage solutions, replacing an older system that could no longer support the increasing technical requirements of high-resolution workflows. The upgrade consolidates all offline, online, grading, and VFX under a single vendor, improving overall efficiency and project management.

One of the most valuable additions to EGG’s workflow is EditShare’s Swift Link technology,  which allows creative teams to access media and work on projects from any location. As productions increasingly demand flexible, hybrid workflows, Swift Link ensures that EGG’s editors, colorists, and VFX artists maintain seamless productivity, whether on-site or remote. The ability to securely stream high-resolution content without performance compromise has been transformative for EGG’s post-production pipeline.

Gareth Young, CEO and Co-Founder of EGG, emphasized the continued value of the partnership with EditShare: “We’ve trusted EditShare for over eight years, and this latest upgrade reinforces why we continue to rely on them. The combination of high-performance storage, local European support, and the flexibility provided by Swift Link made this the right choice for our team.”

Since going live last summer, the upgraded system has enabled EGG to serve as a reference site for high-end grading workflows. The team has praised the simplicity and speed of Swift Link for remote collaboration, without sacrificing the performance needed for complex post-production tasks.

Tara Montford, EVP of Sales and Co-Founder of EditShare, added: “EGG represents the kind of forward-thinking post facility that pushes the boundaries of creative and technical excellence. We’re proud to support their next chapter with a solution that combines performance, flexibility, and security, delivering everything they need to meet the demands of high-resolution workflows, both in-studio and remotely.”

cunoFS: Revolutionising media workflows

cunoFS: Revolutionising media workflows

Tyrell empowers media professionals with cutting-edge solutions like cunoFS. In this blog, MD Bryan Malone explains how cunoFS revolutionises collaborative editing by bridging the gap between on-premise speed and cloud efficiency. Solving many of the challenges creative teams face.

StorJ workflow

What is cunoFS?

BM: cunoFS is the latest advancement in enabling fast and secure collaboration for editorial teams worldwide. It allows your preferred NLE (Non-Linear Editor), such as Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, to access the largest, most cost-effective shared storage pool on the planet while providing on premise level performance.

Why should media professionals use cunoFS?

BM: cunoFS liberates the creative process from the traditional limitations of local hardware, networks, storage capacity, and network complexities. cunoFS enables productions to collaborate seamlessly without needing to move, manage, or download content. You pay only for the storage you use, not for potential capacity. Enabling users to work together from anywhere, on any type of computer.

How does cunoFS work?

BM: Cloud storage offers significant cost savings over traditional on premise storage. cunoFS allows macOS, Windows, and Linux workstations to seamlessly access cloud storage with local drive performance. Users simply log into the cunoFS client, mount the storage, open their NLE, and begin working. Files uploaded through cunoFS are immediately available to all users—no hassle, no complications. As well as being OS agnostic, cunoFS is as happy on a physical on premise workstation as it is running on a virtualised cloud computing platform like Tyrell Cloud, allowing both to utilise the same storage without complicated file sharing or network orchestration.

How is cunoFS different?

BM: cunoFS interfaces very tightly with the operating system, resulting in highly optimised storage performance. Unlike other similar applications, cunoFS leaves the asset complete, exactly as created by the NLE. This allows other technologies, such as SaaS platforms or archives, to also use the asset without any compatibility issues. This “no scrambling” design was a core principle of cunoFS, ensuring uncomplicated and unconditional access to your data.

cunoFS uses intelligent fetching and pre-fetching mechanisms to minimise egress costs, latency, and API calls. It doesn’t require downloading an entire asset; when a cursor is placed on the timeline, it requests only the necessary video frames. This makes editing much more responsive and keeps egress costs under control.

Originally developed for the life sciences sector, where data security is paramount, cunoFS adds POSIX Access Control metadata to assets, enabling granular object-level access control and enhancing enterprise security. It also utilises cloud storage IAM (Identity Access Management) control, deployable on a user-by-user basis, with user access based on cloud security keys. SSO and specific folder permissions are planned for Q2 2025-so  watch this space!

How does cunoFS work with different cloud storage providers, and what makes Storj a particularly good choice?

BM: The cunoFS client is compatible with any public or private object storage provider, and it can even access storage on multiple vendors simultaneously, providing you with maximum workflow and commercial flexibility.

When paired with Storj, the powerful technology of cunoFS becomes an incredible workflow opportunity. Storj is 90% cheaper than the largest cloud providers, greener than any provider, and, most importantly, regionless—a file stored on Storj is instantly available worldwide. A user uploading a file in LA using cunoFS and Storj makes it immediately available for editing by a user in London. Cheaper, faster—a powerful combination!

Unlocking the Power of Storj – Q&A with Dan

Unlocking the Power of Storj – Q&A with Dan

Learn how decentralised storage can revolutionise your media workflows. In this Q&A, Dan Muchmore, Sales & Marketing Director at Tyrell, shares his insights on the benefits of Storj, a game-changing decentralised storage platform.

StorJ workflow

Q: What initially drew Tyrell to Storj as a potential technology partner?

Dan: At Tyrell, we're always on the lookout for innovative solutions that truly benefit our customers, particularly in the cloud. I have to say, when the Storj team shared their vision with us, it was incredibly exciting. They offer something truly special: a powerful trifecta of significant cost savings, advanced technology, and a strong focus on sustainability. It's a combination you simply won't find anywhere else.

Q: Can you offer more detail into the commercial benefits Storj offer?

Dan: Storj delivers a jaw-dropping cost advantage, slashing costs by up to 90% compared to traditional cloud object storage like AWS S3. By leveraging the underutilised capacity of tens of thousands of object storage nodes worldwide through a beneficial commercial scheme, Storj provides major savings for both short-term cloud workflows, directly impacting a production's bottom line, and offering huge long-term savings for archives.

Q: One of Storj's key differentiators is its lack of regional lock-in. How does this benefit users in terms of data accessibility, redundancy, and the ability to collaborate remotely?

Dan: With traditional cloud providers, you're often tied to specific data centres or Availability Zones. This can become a real headache—not only can it be expensive, but it also means juggling complex management across different locations. Storj takes a different approach. It splits your data into secure, independent segments and spreads them across a vast global network of storage nodes. This distributed design gives you some fantastic advantages.

One key benefit is accessibility: when you need your data, Storj finds the closest access point on the network, ensuring fast and consistent retrieval no matter where you are. With over 20,000 storage locations, compared to the 100+ data centres of traditional providers, this makes a huge difference. Furthermore, redundancy is built in, giving you peace of mind. No extra engineering or complicated setups are needed, and because only a small portion of the data segments is required to rebuild your files, data loss becomes incredibly unlikely.

Storj also truly simplifies remote collaboration. Need to collaborate with someone across the globe? No problem. A file uploaded in LA, for example, can be edited in real-time by someone in London, significantly cutting costs and streamlining your workflow.

Q: What are the green benefits of Storj and how do they benefit customers?

Dan: Whether you're a large corporation or a small TV production company, we all know that reducing our carbon footprint and embracing sustainability is a big priority these days. One of the biggest environmental impacts of data storage, including the distributed cloud, comes from manufacturing the storage hardware itself. Storj tackles this problem in a smart way:

No Extra Energy Use: Since Storj uses existing storage drives that are already running, it doesn't add any extra energy consumption.

No Added Cooling Emissions: Because the drives are already in operation, Storj doesn't create any additional cooling emissions.

Less Demand for New Hardware: This means fewer resources need to be mined to create new drives, servers, and data centres. The storage capacity is already there—we simply put it to good use.

By using Storj in your post production or archive workflow, you can immediately boost your sustainability efforts and contribute to your albert certification. In fact, you can reduce your carbon intensity by a significant 83% compared to using on-premise storage or other cloud providers.

Q: How can customers get started with Storj?

Dan: The Tyrell team is happy to discuss your specific needs and workflows. Contact us sales@tyrellcct.com or call 0207 148 6201 or +353 (1) 888 1118. Alternatively, you can sign up directly at https://www.storj.io/signup?partner=tyrell
