MediaSilo Camera to Cloud with ATOMOS Collaboration

Atomos provide mobile on-camera devices that allow you to capture and stream content to a cloud hosted service, where you can directly record the proxies and make them available for viewing and sub-clipping.

It’s a workflow that’s been established for many years but EditShare and Atomos have now collaborated to accelerate the creative process.

Editors can access and start reviewing footage as soon as the first instance lands (we are awaiting confirmation this would work on growing files for editing). Once the Atomos device is paired and connected, you can add MediaSilo as the destination and even select down to a granular level of target project folder.

This is a significant step forward and brings acquisition closer to EditShare storage options and software tools for a speedy turnaround for operators, production staff and agencies alike.

Anyone purchasing an Atomos Cloud plan with a device will be provided a FREE all-inclusive subscription to MediaSilo.

EditShare EFS – NVMe

The latest EFS storage platform from EditShare is a small form factor NVMe product, available in five capacity sizes: 24TB, 48TB, 96TB, 192TB and 384TB and scalable up to 10+PB in capacity.

This new lightning-fast storage is designed for 4K and 8K media files in some of the most demanding codecs and file formats such as DPX, OpenEXR and more.  This is relevant for the higher end grading workflows, which typically the traditional EFS range wouldn’t be considered for.

The pricing is marginally higher than the equivalent SSD’s (24TB SSD is £32,000 /24TB NVME is £35,500) but it offers up to three times the performance in terms of bandwidth.

This could open more opportunities in the likes of graphics, design, and potentially even animation and VFX for smaller companies.

EditShare have addressed a growing trend amongst storage suppliers in offering performance in a small form factor. Wrapping it up with the EditShare software tools provides a very compelling ecosystem.

MediaSilo and FLOW Integration

This new integration of MediaSilo and FLOW brings together a wealth of tools and resources, whilst simplifying the viewing experience.

MediaSilo can now trigger FLOW automation and the movement of media and file. As well as provide the highest level of review and approve to production and post production customers all over the world.

Existing MediaSilo users can upgrade their software today and as long as they have FLOW on their EFS platform can start accessing all the tools to provide even more value to their existing workflow.

Yellowmoon

Yellowmoon

Yellowmoon’s commitment to to the future of high-end television and film in Northern Ireland

Yellowmoon has long been Belfast’s premier post house and when you walk into their new purpose-built facility it’s not hard to see why. No dreary basement cutting rooms here– it’s all floor to ceiling glass, pewter bars and fabric walls, in fact it’s as much boutique hotel as it is post facility.

But hidden behind the stylish interiors lie the company’s latest state of the art facilities: a Dolby Atmos HE mixing theatre, a top end screening / grading room with Dolby Atmos HE playback, and a hybrid ADR and foley room. It’s an impressive addition to a facility that had humble beginnings 30 years ago.

From the ground up

Yellowmoon’s owner, Greg Darby is a highly respected documentary editor who grew up in Dublin before moving to Belfast in 1991. Darby recalls, “you had broadcasters in Belfast that you didn’t have down South. Channel 4, BBC and ITV all had a remit to make programmes here. I found myself as a freelance editor with plenty of work, so in 1994 I took on my first assistant, hired a room and that was the start of the Yellowmoon journey.

“15 years ago, 80% of our business was factual, today that’s completely reversed and 80% is now high-end drama. The turning point was the arrival of Game of Thrones. Up to that point if a BBC drama came to the island, it was inevitably made in the South. HBO’s Game of Thrones changed all that. It gave us the chance to prove that we had the infrastructure, the talent, and the facilities to be able to deliver the very best drama.”

Talking about a revolution

Producer, Mark Huffam has one of the most enviable lists of Hollywood credits, including Saving Private Ryan, The Martian and this Autumn’s blockbuster Napoleon. He first worked with the team at Yellowmoon in 2009 on Universal’s Your Highness. Huffam encouraged Universal to keep the work in Belfast. “The editor wanted to stay in LA, but we brought him over and got him settled in. He loved the cutting rooms, the attitude of the people at Yellowmoon and just being in Holywood, County Down, with all the local restaurants and bars. It’s a very warm and welcoming place.

“The next thing that came along was Game of Thrones and with Greg’s advice and support, we showed HBO the advantages of shooting digitally to offset Northern Ireland’s shorter and darker days. This was HBO’s first major foray into shooting this way and the start of a digital revolution.

“I am often credited with bringing Game of Thrones to Northern Ireland, but it was a team effort. Greg Darby, and what he’s created here, was equally as important as me and as Northern Ireland Screen.

“Greg has a terrific instinct. He brings good people in and nurtures them. The reason he has good staff is because he’s a master. He has a can-do attitude that is infectious.

“No matter what time of night, if you’re trying to get something out last minute for a screening, there’s no huffing and puffing.”

Darby continues, “Game of Thrones changed us as a facility. It made us better and by the time that show left we all knew exactly what it took to work on drama at the highest level. So, in the wake of Game of Thrones when shows like The Fall and Line of Duty arrived on our shores, we were ready to take our chance and we did.”

In the mix

Re-recording mixer, Paul Maynes originally joined Yellowmoon to mix current affairs docs. “I had assisted on a few dramas and was assisting on Alan Cubitt’s The Fall, when the re-recording mixer went on holiday and couldn’t finish the job, I stepped in and haven’t looked back since. I’ve been fortunate enough to have mixed a lot of big shows since then like Line of Duty, Derry Girls, Blue Lights and World on Fire.

“The new Atmos HE theatre started out with me and Greg standing in this space when it was just rubble and pillars. The original use was for retail. We had huge chimneys going up the central atrium, with the very real prospect of audio vibrating throughout the building and given there were 40 residents living above the space – it was a worry.

“Level Acoustics Design came onboard and brought with them their unique knowledge and understanding of how to build an Atmos theatre.

“Chris Walls did sonic tests in the apartments and corridors above us and worked out how we could bypass this without any major construction work. We’ve never had any complaints since completion. Not a peep.

“Matt Ward had the answer to every question we had about tech, and we went back and forward with how to spec the room with Vanessa Archer who headed up the technical architectural drawings and room design with Greg’s wife Sharon Darby adding all the interior details and flourishes.

“I previously worked on an Avid S6, and it was always going to be the S6 and Pro Tools. I wanted a long desk with a centre console as I do a lot of editing myself, and I also wanted faders on both sides. As a single operating mixer, the AKA desk is incredible to work at. I have everything exactly where I want it.

“Studio Creations has vast experience of doing audio networking and Rob King introduced us to Q SYS which I love. I can control the entire room from an iPad – the heating, lighting, projector, ratios and speaker EQ. Rob can even write new functionality and shortcuts into the interface from his home. (When Rob was explaining this to me, I thought he was making it up.)

“The key thing that Level Acoustics and Studio Creations gave us was confidence. The room we now have lets us work on bigger and better shows. We mixed HTM’s latest Covid drama, Breathtaking for ITVX in this room – it sounds amazing. I’m now working on the second series of BBC’s Wreck. The room helps me do some of my best work.”

Picture with sound

Colourist, Scott Ferguson joined Yellowmoon 15 years ago, as a first job in the industry, following a Northern Ireland Screen trainee scheme. When Game of Thrones season 1 shot digitally, Ferguson graded the digital dailies.

Ferguson’s break came in the wake of grading Mike Lennox’ short film, Boogaloo and Graham in 2014 which won a BAFTA and got nominated for an Oscar. He went on to grade many short films and docs. When Mike Lennox directed Channel 4’s Derry Girls, Ferguson graded all the seasons. He has graded many dramas since including the last three of World Productions’ Line of Duty series and more recently Euston Film’s comedy horror, Wreck.

“Having a room like this is about giving our clients the best possible experience. They get the best seats in the house. With the same Dolby Atmos speaker system and set-up, that we have in the mix room – the audio is incredible. Although this is a picture room, there’s no compromise in sound moving from the dubbing theatre to here.”

Everything under the moon

The third stage of the new build is a hybrid ADR and foley room. Darby wanted to complement the main mix theatre with dialogue and sound effects recording and further extend Yellowmoon’s services.
A hybrid room made best sense of the space available without compromising on the scale of the main theatres.

As part of the new expansion Darby and Post Producer, Alan Freir called on long time technology collaborators Bryan Malone and Declan Hogan at Tyrell and invested further in their Avid estate including a second Avid S6 console (with 32 faders, MTRX and HDX core) for the main Atmos HE mixing room, an Avid S1 console for the ADR and Foley room and 360TB of Avid NEXIS high performance storage to bring together the picture and audio workflow within a new network. Darby says, “we looked at other storage but at the end of the day we’re an Avid house and NEXIS makes best sense for us.”

AKA Design were the “obvious choice” for the operational furniture. All the desks have a walnut finish with a large leather buffer bar running the total length of the grade desk. The S6 desk is ergonomically tailored to place Re-Recording Mixer Paul Maynes in the centre, “where he likes to be” with the space for two further operators for total flexibility. Darby says, “the desks are fantastic and perfectly complement the aesthetic we wanted.”

The next chapter

Darby continues, “Everything about Yellowmoon has always been organic and this new facility is no different. We just felt the time was right for us as a company to take this step. I believe it’s a step that not only illustrates just how far we have come in the last 30 years but more importantly it’s a step that demonstrates our confidence in the future of the film and television industry in Northern Ireland.

“Thanks to the wonderful home-grown team at Yellowmoon, the drive and talents of local producers like Mark and to the foresight and ambition of Northern Ireland Screen, we think it’s definitely a step in the right direction.”

AKA Design

“The furniture is the centrepiece of the room and if that isn’t right – nothing is right. Guy and the team at AKA were very personable, flexible, and always accommodated the many changes we made as the project evolved. The functional but elegant results speak for themselves.” Greg Darby, Managing Director, Yellowmoon

Level Acoustic

“The acoustic design element of this project was paramount, but it wasn’t the ONLY challenge for Chris and his team. They took what was a car park and turned into one of the finest facilities this side of the Irish Sea. We couldn’t be happier with the finished product, and we couldn’t have done it without them.” Greg Darby, Managing Director, Yellowmoon

Studio Creations

“At the initial stage of the project there were three of four possible contractors but once we met Justin and saw first-hand his company’s work at Bleat, we knew they were the team for us. Their attention to detail and expertise in both construction and install were essential to the success of this build.” Greg Darby, Managing Director, Yellowmoon

Tyrell

“The first bit of Avid kit Yellowmoon ever bought was from Tyrell, so it was crucial they were on this journey with us. From the outset, they understood how important this project was and they did what they always do – offer the very best technical support and know how on the island.” Alan Freir, Post Producer, Yellowmoon

Tyrell implements EditShare storage for National Theatre

Tyrell implements EditShare storage for National Theatre

The Royal National Theatre - more usually referred to as the National Theatre, the National or just the NT - is one of the UK's best known theatre venues. Founded in 1963, the reach and influence of the National has extended over the last 15 years beyond its concrete building on London's South Bank. This is in part due to NT Live, the cinema programme of multi-camera captures of productions, distributed by satellite or DCP, to over 700 UK sites and more globally. Making the arts more accessible to a wider audience.

During the covid pandemic the National Theatre’s live performances were suspended but they adapted by creating the NT at Home streaming service. Initially it started as a program of free streams on YouTube with the full NT at Home SVOD service launching in December 2020. During this time the National Theatre discovered inefficiencies in the infrastructure when faced with a large increase in captured content, so they needed to look at the addition of post production storage. Central to this was the installation of an EditShare EFS 300 storage system, which was designed and implemented by Tyrell.

"When the pandemic hit, we were no longer able to capture new material and the cinemas were closed as well," comments Jim Cross, Senior Post Production Manager, National Theatre. "But part of our Arts Council remit as a publicly funded organisation is to bring theatre to our audiences. Because of this we started putting out productions free on YouTube, which became the NT At Home platform. To support that we went from a team of 15 to now nearly 60 people, who now work on the dual delivery of NT Live for cinema and purpose capture for NT at Home."

Cross explains that these services along with the requirement to promote shows in the theatre, as well as the rise in the volume of work for the internal learning department meant their workload increased significantly. As a result, both the production/post-production and archiving departments realised the three legacy servers that had been used since the mid-2010s were no longer suitable for the increased demands being put on them. "It was very hard drive-based, with IT 'non-video' servers that weren't specifically for media," he says. "And these days we do less live satellite, we do more full post-production workflows in house, including editing, mixing and grading, so we needed a more dynamic, powerful and robust solution."

National Theatre

This has meant there is a lot more media moving around and being worked on by the edit team, which has doubled in size in the last three years.  Cross explains that by the end of 2021 the increased workload meant the NT was beginning to run out of storage. "During the covid pandemic everyone was working from home and shuttling hard drives back and forth," he says. "We knew we were going to come back into the building, but it became very obvious we needed near-line, hot storage. A NT Live show takes on average 4 terabytes of storage and it would take three, four or five hours to ingest that. Now with EditShare EFS we can do it in just 45 minutes."

The NT's digital content is archived using the Preservica cloud-based platform and although that is a self-contained operation, it needed to connect to any new near-line storage set-up in a more efficient way than previously. "Historically there wasn't such a smooth workflow process around getting material from the digital media team into the archive involved a lot of local knowledge on the part of the editors, producers and me," comments Post-Production Archive Manager Zoe Bowers, who describes herself as sitting between the digital media team and the archive. "The move towards the new EditShare system came in tandem with thinking we all needed to know where content is so we can find it, particularly as so much more is being created." Tyrell’s sales and marketing director, Dan Muchmore adds, “it's a common issue that every facility hits as they grow and it's our speciality as a technical partner to help migrate workflows away from a single source or knowledge to a way of working that benefits the business, regardless of team size and structure”.

The NT previously did not have a digital asset management system but worked on a SMB file share arrangement, with folders for short-term and long-term storage. With both Tier 1 and Tier 2 server systems nearing the end of their operational lives, Jim Cross and Zoe Bowers instigated a request for proposal (RFP) process, with EditShare being their primary choice for a new system.

"I worked with Tyrell on the installation of the system into our server room, which involved the networking and commissioning of the 256TB EditShare hardware," Tom Rhodes, Head of IT Infrastructure explains. "But really it was all quite self-contained within the EditShare technology. It's now utilised on our 10Gb infrastructure, which allows us to ingest material a lot quicker than before. EditShare also has its FLOW media asset management software and although we haven't fully implemented this yet, it is something we looked at when selecting the system."

The National Theatre has been using EditShare for 18 months and in that time, Jim Cross concludes, the new storage installation has changed the way the post-production process for the NT. "Previously the team would take material from the SANs and save content locally and on drives," he says. "Now, the machines themselves are clear of data and we don't use hard drives in that way anymore because of how fast it is. This means anyone can pick up a project at any point because everything is in EditShare. It has revolutionised the way we work."

The NT has always led the way in representing the arts in the UK. Constantly evolving to find ways to make productions more accessible to wider audiences, both geographically and financially. NT Live began as a fantastic initiative and become a leader in the event cinema industry. What we love most about their hunger to evolve is that the NT team worked hard to not only maintain the value of the arts to its patrons but also the actors and production teams, who would have been impacted by the loss of work.

This evolution continues to this day, with Jim, Zoe and Tom not only identifying their post production inefficiency but also the importance of their roles as stewards of the NT archive. Inefficiencies often result in additional expenditure, which could instead be used by the arts and as we know the NT archive is important for future generations. EditShare solves both these problems whilst giving the team another opportunity to evolve again.

Tyrell and EditShare provide agile content management for Linney

Tyrell and EditShare provide agile content management for Linney

Creative marketing agency works with Tyrell to develop future-ready solution

EditShare®, the technology leader that enables storytellers to create and manage collaborative media workflows, has provided a comprehensive storage and asset management platform for creative marketing agency Linney. The system was designed and implemented by UK reseller Tyrell.

Linney, based in Mansfield in central England, is a leading developer of marketing content for commercial clients. Those clients include some of the most well-known global brands, who rely on Linney for innovative approaches to engage customers, including material for social media, in-store displays and out-of-home digital signage.

The company had an existing central storage system which was a proprietary platform, and had reached the end of its supported life. It had a very clear idea of its needs for content storage and management, which included the ability to access material from multiple locations, as well as hosting in-house editing, grading and finishing suites.

Linney worked with specialist reseller and systems integrator Tyrell on defining the requirements, and developing the system. Tyrell in turn specified EditShare storage, and an architecture that includes three 20 TB SSD nodes, two 128 TB EFS-300 online storage servers, and a 300 TB EFS-40NL nearline storage system, together with the software required to manage the content and the flows between devices. The nearline storage node is in a separate building, providing resilience to the installation.

Critical to the success of the Linney installation is the ability to directly connect post-production tools. The facility includes multiple editing, grading and finishing suites running Avid Media Composer and DaVince Resolve. Producer/directors also access the shared storage from their laptops, over the office network, so can clip up content in preparation for the craft editors. The ability of the EditShare environment to support all these functions is vital for Linney.

“Our business is about creating and delivering exciting content which enhances the brand values of our clients,” said Andy Dawson, Lead Editor at Linney. “We really need our technology platform to just be there and do just what we need, so our people can focus all their energies on telling stories. This is very clearly EditShare’s brand value, and Tyrell showed how we could implement the technology that would serve us well as we continue to develop our business over the coming years.”

Simon Wocka, Account Manager for Cloud and Solution Sales at Tyrell, noted “Our first role in this was to listen to what the customer was really saying. We knew they didn’t need a like-for-life replacement for their old shared storage, and by understanding what Linney’s business goals are, we could propose a solution that puts them in a really good place.”

Said Bacho, Chief Revenue Officer at EditShare, added. “The complete solution is very adaptable and easily configured to the way you want to work. It provides a lot of practical tools, like transcoding on the platform as well as direct access for post production tools. Linney wanted simplicity in operation, efficiency and speed, and this EditShare installation provides all of that and more.”

Linney has appointed Port-P to manage all of its IT services. Tyrell sold the EditShare system to Port-P, who will manage it on Linney’s behalf. The contract includes five years of hardware and software support by Tyrell on behalf of EditShare.

The first phase of the system was installed and handed over in mid-2023. Linney and Tyrell continue to work together to implement additional functionality to meet client demand.
